Few landmarks are as recognizable and awe-inspiring at the Angkor temples in Siem Reap, Cambodia. These incredible religious structures were built in the 12th century, originally as places of Hindu worship, but have since been adopted by the Buddhists of Cambodia & beyond. Angkor Wat is so much more than just one temple, but a multiple of ancient ruins spanning 203 acres. The modern name, Angkor Wat, means “Temple City” or “City of Temples” in Khmer.
When we traveled to Siem Reap, a trip to the temples of Angkor Wat was a must. We braved the early morning hours, and went for sunrise, which was a great choice. The view of the sun rising above the beautiful lines of the temples was just amazing. The cooler temperatures allowed for exploring not just Angkor Wat, but nearby temples of Bayon, Angkor Thom, Ta Phrom, and even smaller ones.
This is Cambodia’s primary tourist attraction, and for great reason. There’s nothing like these structures anywhere else in the world. I was thrilled to be able to tour for them for a second time, and bring my husband for his first. A traveler’s dream! Here are just a sample of the MANY photos we captured.
