I had pretty limited options from my library for a book written by an author from Bolivia. Juan De Recacoechea had two, Andean Express and American Visa. Ultimately, I chose Andean Express because it sounded like it had Agatha Christie’s Murder on the Orient Express vibes. Sadly, it did not live up to my hopes, but it wasn’t a terrible book.

Andean Express takes place on a cross-country train ride from Bolivia to Chile and through the Andes Mountains. There are several “colorful” characters, some noble, some naive, and some with ulterior motives. Our main character (I guess) is a student, traveling back to school and his sexual encounters are a main part of this narrative. None of the characters feel fully developed and the whole story fell flat for me. It is an interesting premise and setting, but just didn’t live up it’s potential.
