An American Mom in Asia

I was unfamiliar with the music of Angelique Kidjo before reading her memoir, Spirit Rising: My Life, My Music…but I am no longer! I don’t read many books by musicians, and this may have actually been my first! But Kidjo’s poignant account of her life in Benin and her thrilling music career immediately sent me to YouTube to watch this woman perform. Her music is compelling, and so is writing. I immensely enjoyed reading about her African roots and it’s influence on her music career. The book was filled with pictures and stories that capture the reader. This book is for anyone who is fan of world music and is the perfect pick to celebrate Benin.

Angelique Kidjo is a world treasure, and I am glad to have to discovered her.
