When it came to choosing books for the Caribbean island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, I was quite limited by my digital library selection. Thankfully Jamaica Kincaid’s short novel, Annie John was available. This novel tells the coming of age story of young Annie John, navigating changing family dynamics and complicated friendships. She experiences a range of emotions and physical ailments, which build her narrative until she leaves home at the age of 18. Those years of 11 to 18 are difficult for most young girls, and Annie John was not immune to the messy and trying times. I would not say I loved this book. It was so short, and it took me forever to read it. I didn’t enjoy the character of Annie John and didn’t want to return back to her often. The book provided a limited view of Antigua, as well as some of the social dynamics on the island. It met the requirements for this challenge, but this book was not a favorite.
